A general guide to the strength of cigars from various countries may now be helpful for beginner. Below are the characteristics of the tobacco from different countries:
| BRAZIL | Dark, rich and smooth. Slightly sweet flavour. Natural sweetness on the palate, dark wrapper. Medium bodied. |
| CAMEROON | Heavy aroma with spicy taste. Medium to full bodied. |
| DOMINICAN | Usually smooths, mild and slow burning. Light to Medium bodied. Honey, earthy. |
| ECUADOR | Good flavour but mild. |
| HAVANA/CUBA | Medium to full-bodied, earthy, and spicy. |
| HANDURA | Medium to full-bodied, spicier than Cuban and cinnamon taste. |
| JAMAICA | Mild and subtle. |
| MEXICO | From mild to full-bodied. |
| NICARAGUA | Full-bodied and aromatic. Wrappers are slightly sweet. |
| INDONESIA | Light to medium bodied and spicy. |
